What's the Difference Between Therapy and Coaching?

Here in New Orleans, I often hear the question, "So you're basically a therapist, right?" Well, actually, no, I am not. As a credentialed ADHD coach, I work in collaboration with therapists, psychiatrists, psychologists, and other medical professionals. While many of my clients see therapists regularly, they also benefit from my coaching to enhance their executive function skills and accountability. In fact, several clients have been referred to me by their therapists, and together, we form a winning team dedicated to your well-being and success.

A client of mine had expressed in therapy that she wanted to find a new job. However, week after week, she remained stuck and unable to make progress on her own. Her therapist referred her to me, and together, we identified the motivations that ignited her drive and sense of purpose. With newfound clarity, she set specific goals, created a strategic plan, and consistently followed through. We worked in harmony with the unique way her brain is wired, empowering her instead of working against her. As her accountability partner, I cheered her on throughout the process, leading her to secure a position that truly complements her strengths and allows her to positively impact others' lives.

Coaching is a motivational and future-oriented process, focused on progress, milestones, and fostering a co-partnership. Like an athletic coach, I'll help you capitalize on your strengths, co-create effective strategies and plans, encourage you, and learn from past actions.

In contrast, therapy is more analytical, delving into the past and addressing symptoms to facilitate healing. It involves more rigid relationship boundaries and seeks to help individuals recover from past traumas, cope with loss, or manage depression and anxiety. Therapists often explore the "why" behind behavioral patterns, while coaches work on the "how" to achieve objectives. Together, these two approaches complement each other beautifully.

As your coach, I'll be there to support you regularly, checking in at least twice a week between sessions, preferably daily. I will help you stay on track, follow through, and honor promises to yourself. You'll learn from past successes, recognize your strengths, and apply them in challenging situations. Together, we'll anticipate and overcome obstacles and distractions. If things don't go according to plan, I'll guide you toward developing a growth mindset, learning flexibility, and increasing resilience.

Who wouldn't want a coach as their advocate, encouraging them to live each day with intent, aligned with their purpose, to achieve balance and fulfillment? Together, let's embark on this transformative journey, unlocking your true potential for a more purposeful and fulfilling life. Book your FREE 20-Minute consultation today.
