The article "Four Steps to Independence: How to Support (Not Enable) a Child with ADHD" by Elaine Taylor-Klaus and Diane Dempster at ADDitude Magazine has some excellent tips on how to support your child's independence. 

In my work as an ADHD coach, I like to encourage parents to think of scaffolding: This means providing support so that your child is able to function independently. You guide your child to do the things that are just one step beyond his or her capability. Step by step, children will get there on their own!
